Welcome to Transitional Kindergarten at Douglas Elementary School!
Transitional Kindergarten at DES is a special place. We pride ourselves on being your child's developmentally appropriate bridge between their preschool experience and traditional kindergarten. Together we will intentionally focus on the kindergarten readiness skills your child needs and weave them into their own areas of interest. Young children are naturally curious and we will lean into their world to foster the love of learning in a school setting. THANK YOU for trusting us with your child's first step into our public school. We take our districts mission statement seriously. Saugutuck Public Schools - Prepare Students for Life
Nuts and Bolts of TK
Daily TK Details:
Morning Arrival:
- Drop off: The front doors of school (main entrance) open at 8am. TK parents walk their children down to our classroom and sign them in. There is a clipboard by the door. The first week you may help your child get in the classroom door, put their bag/coat away, turn in their lunch or lunch order, and drop off their daily folder. After the first week we would love for your children to begin building independence and responsibility by doing those jobs on their own. We will of course, be around to help. Please be sure to sign your child in each day and mark down how they will get home.
- Bus Riders: You child will be guided from the bus to their classroom. We will be sure to check them in and help them get settled.
- Pick up: TK is dismissed slightly earlier than our 1st - 5th graders. This year please meet us between 2:55 - 3:00 at the far, westside door, at the front end of the building. It is the door closest to the cafeteria. I will have your child all packed-up and ready to go. I will have a clipboard for you to sign out your child. If you have older children at DES you can then walk down to the main doors where all students will be dismissed at the bell.
- Bus Riders: Our instructional assistants will walk your child to their bus and be sure they are safely on and ready to go home. The TK and K students all sit at the front of the bus.
- Aftercare: We will update this plan prior to the 2019-2020 school year.
- www.greensececlass.weebly.com is our classroom website/blog. This is where I will post photos and highlights of our learning. Please be sure to put this on your bookmark bar so you can stay updated.
- Cold Lunch / Lunch from Home: In the morning your child will take their lunchbox out of their backpack and put it on their “lunch card” on the counter. Please be sure to put your child’s name on their lunchbox. We will collect the lunches and they will be waiting in the lunchroom for the students. We will make sure your child has a seat in the lunchroom and get them their lunchbox.
- Hot lunch / School Lunch: If your child does not have a lunchbox on their card, your child will record A, B, or C on their card. We will help your child decide what option they would like to order.
Open Door Classroom (pending approval) dates:
Open Door Classroom is our outdoor learning initiative that TK enjoys each year. The goal is to get our students outside for hands-on, exploratory learning in nature. We focus on local wild animals, plants, and water systems. We will also integrate our kindergarten readiness skills into our nature-based exploration.
Dates will be posted later in August, 2019.
